Met Community – What We Do

Met Community, part of Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Physical Activity & Health team, works to help people across Cardiff move more, feel better, and thrive. We focus on reducing inequalities in physical activity by supporting the communities, groups and individuals who need us most.

Our Mission

To create an active, healthy and connected Cardiff where everyone regardless of background, ability or circumstance has the opportunity to be active in ways that are fun, inclusive and sustainable.

How We Make a Difference

1. Developing Local Leaders

We train and support the people who inspire others to be active, including teachers, nursery practitioners, community coaches, volunteers and young leaders. Programmes such as SKIP, Active Tots, Young Ambassadors, Game Changers, and Make Every Contact Count (MECC) build confidence and skills across schools and communities.

2. Community-Led Delivery

Our work is rooted in Cardiff’s neighbourhoods Riverside, Llanrumney, St. Mellons, Splott, Pentwyn and beyond.

We co-design activities with local people, from Tai Chi, basketball sessions, and youth tournaments, to support that helps residents access local clubs and long-term opportunities.

3. System-Wide Collaboration

We bring partners together across health, education and sport to create joined-up pathways.
This includes the Cardiff School Swimming Pilot, dietetics partnerships such as Pipyn & Pipyn Actif, and coordinated work with NHS teams, Swim Wales, GLL, the Urdd and more.

4. Inclusive Opportunities for All

We design activity that welcomes everyone especially those facing the biggest barriers.
Our inclusive programmes include Girls in Sport, Insport, Neuro Physio Pathway, and Step Into Sport, supporting disabled people, girls and women, neuro-rehab patients, and young people at risk of exclusion or exploitation.

5. Targeted Support Where It’s Needed Most

We deliver bespoke activity for groups who often miss out, such as:

  • Bike & Brew for older adults

  • Rise and Thrive for children exiting dietetic support

  • The Active Leisure Scheme, supporting hundreds of residents to get moving in their local community

6. Insight-Driven Innovation

We use research and community consultation to understand barriers and design solutions. This includes disability insights across the region and local research projects like the Girls Cycling Project.

Open Campus

Our Open Campus programme brings schools, students and communities together through major engagement events reaching thousands of participants each year through sports festivals, colour runs, cycling events, NFL Flag sessions and more.

In Short

Met Community empowers Cardiff to move more by working with communities, developing leaders, supporting inclusive activity, and building strong, sustainable pathways into sport, play and physical activity.
